2 Brief Bible Analogies for the Holiday, "Better Breakfast Month"

~By Sharon Czerwien

Whew—that title is a mouthful!

Did you know that the holiday, Better Breakfast Month, rolls around each September? Technically (from what I understand), its official day is September 1. However, many health websites mention it can be celebrated for the entire month.

Who knew, right!? I recently learned about the holiday thanks to Rose Marketing Solutions, and I thought to myself, hmmmm…this sounds like a blog idea I should write about this month on Bumps Are Okay.

Many health sites have rightly taken advantage of this holiday to “preach” about the importance of a healthy breakfast each morning. I must agree—if I do not eat breakfast, I get out of whack for the entire day.

Spiritual Food Analogies

The Bible uses neat spiritual analogies between food and God’s Word.

Here is a Bible verse that came to my mind after dwelling on Better Breakfast Month:

“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby…” (1 Peter 2:1, NKJV).

As a baby needs and desires milk for survival, we daily need (and ought to desire) the 'spiritual food' found in God’s Word.

In my Thomas Nelson Study Bible, this above verse is under the section called “The Enduring Word” (1 Peter 1:22-2:3). It follows shortly after a Bible verse I learned in high school:

“The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever” (1:25, NKJV).

In essence, we should view the enduring Word of God as a necessary spiritual nourishment so that we desire to utilize it for our spiritual growth.

Interestingly, King David uses a food analogy, too. He writes how God’s Word should be desired more than fine gold, *and* that God's Word is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb (Psalm 19:10).

Wrapping Up

During this Better Breakfast Month, we can totally make it our goal to improve personal breakfast habits. More importantly, though, let’s be sure to remember to nourish ourselves spiritually.

Milk and honey anyone??? =]

Go for it! Eat on,

Sharon
